On occasion, individuals come into our lives and inspire us by their goodness and passion. For many at Zwick Construction, that person was Dennis Phelps. A long-time employee of Zwick Construction and friend, Dennis passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025. His contribution to our company and lives is vast, and we will forever be grateful for his influence.
Our first encounter with Dennis happened nearly 18 years ago. The first Zwick Construction office was located on Main Street in Salt Lake City, UT. Dennis lived behind that office. Over the weeks and months, he became friends with the first employees of Zwick, especially Mark Bateman and Darin Zwick. Eventually, Dennis was hired on as a security guard. Night after night, he would drive around our construction sites, patrolling and protecting.
As Darin Zwick explained, “Dennis was proud to be on the Zwick team and loved driving his red truck with the Zwick logo on the door. He did a great job patrolling the jobsites and keeping them safe.”
Dennis not only cared deeply about his work professionally, but also personally. Darin continued, “In fact, one month when my neighborhood was having a wave of burglaries, Dennis parked his red truck in front of my house all night when I had to travel out of town.”
Dennis was a friend to everyone. It was an honor to know him these past 18 years. He became part of our family and loved being part of the Zwick family. Dennis made me a better person, and I benefited much from our relationship.
Passionate and hard-working, Dennis was truly a friend to all. As his health began to decline, Dennis moved to the Inn-Between, an end-of-life care center in Salt Lake. While he was there, many of his friends here at Zwick visited him frequently, bringing him peanut butter sandwiches and milk—services which Dennis deeply appreciated. Most notably, Dennis had a special appreciation for Mark Bateman, who has been a friend and caretaker to Dennis over the past many years. Mark and his wife included Dennis in their family gatherings, holidays, and birthday celebrations.
Undoubtedly, Dennis has touched our lives and made our company a better place. We are grateful for his influence. We express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Dennis Phelps. Dennis will be missed deeply.
