Back at the Harold B. Lee Library, a Salt Lake City Zwick Construction team turned over another great project for Brigham Young University in December. An expansive project, this remodel represents a continuing relationship of trust with the university.
The Harold B. Lee Library was built in 1961 and spans over 700,000 SF. Throughout the decades, various remodels have taken place at the center of learning, including several by Zwick Construction. This particular project aimed to remodel the bathrooms on four levels. In addition to the remodel of those bathrooms, the project also included a large remodel of the HVAC and plumbing on the lower two floors, which required the teams to drain the pipes, remove and replace those pipes, and reroute HVAC systems and fire sprinklers.
BYU estimates that around 13,000 students are in the library at any time during the day. By nature of such a busy building, the team had to work through challenges to keep those students safe while also completing the project within the schedule.
During certain times of construction, the team had to reroute traffic and close bathrooms (only two at a time). The remodel of the lower floors required teams to remove and replace parts of the ceiling, which also required them to protect the students and infrastructure below. The team used ICRA walls where applicable.
Outside safety concerns, the team also implemented strategies to keep construction disturbances to a minimum in a quiet library. Occasionally the team worked after-hours and weekends.
With such an old building, the remodel began with many unknowns. For example, the team had to figure out exactly where the plumbing lines were without accurate drawings. Working around these challenges, the team identified the locations of the pipes quickly.
Even with those setbacks and challenges, the team was able to deliver the project. Congratulations to the team on completing this project at the Harold B. Lee Library.
